"Green Shift"

Will Mr. Dion's gamble pay off? Are the people ready for a Carbon Tax? Will it be misunderstood when gas prices are skyrocketing? Will Harper and company be able to exploit the situation?

In a political election, perceptions and rhetoric take over. If Dion loses, it will not only be the defeat of Dion and the Liberal Party, it will also be a defeat for the issue of global warming. Carbon taxes can be a risky election issue.

Time will tell. Reminds me of Joe Clark in 1980 when he wanted to impose certain excise taxes on gasoline, he was soon defeated by Trudeau. Dion's carbon tax is a risky strategy.

  1. Gas prices are already skyrocketing. As are food prices and pretty much every other commodity.

  2. I think the price of gas is because of Speculators on the market, which in turn puts up the price of food etc., for hauling. The price of grain is up because of farmers using it for ethanol. The only thing I disagree with in the Green shift, is the price of heating fuels for homes, even though they will get money back on income taxes, they willl remember the hike more.

  3. I do not disagree with you, Lizt. However, strategy used by Mr. Dion is very risky. “Tax” is a poisonous word in politics especially when a new tax is imposed. I like Barack Obama’s strategy in US elections– go at big oil companies and get some of the excessive “profits” back and use that money to protect the environment through environmentally friendly sources of energy. Also stop gouging by the big oil companies to bring down gas prices. It is basically the same thing but worded differently. However, if Mr. Dion and Libs can do a good job in selling the carbon tax it might work but I am not sure.
