Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann: A Revolutionary

What is with this Congresswoman Bachmann from Minnesota? Last fall she was on Chris Mathews' show, Hardball, on MSNBC. There she stated that there were anti-American members of the Congress and that they must be investigated and exposed. She almost lost her seat over it.

More recently she made this statement:

"I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax
because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us 'having a revolution
every now and then is a good thing.' and the people – we the people – are going
to have to fight back hard if we're not going to lose our country. And I think
this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United
States."

She is saying that Obama and associates are a threat to the US and that people need to take back the country through armed revolution. Has this congresswoman been assessed by a psychiatrist? If not, she needs to be. She also stated that she is like:

"...a foreign correspondent on enemy lines (in the Congress)."

"The enemies" being Democrats, and "behind enemy lines." Wow, some patriot. Surely another gun totting conservative that Sarah Palin may stand shoulder to shoulder with when Congresswoman Bachmann calls for action to the battlefield to start the revolution. Maybe I misunderstood and she is talking about some movie which will be playing at a theatre near you.

My Ratings of Recent Leaders of the Liberal Party of Canada

I will begin with Pierre Trudeau. In my opinion he was the best Liberal leader of the twentieth century. He gave international visibility to Canada and his reforms on immigration, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and human rights is an extraordinary legacy which will be cherished for decades to come.

Then there was John Turner. The hopes were high for him, he had an image and reputation as Minister of Finance. However, as leader he was lacklustre and he paid a heavy price at the polls.

After that was Jean Chrétien. He was a relatively underestimated leader, but he showed extraordinary political skills and instinct. He pretty well demolished the Progressive Conservatives in 1993. I had the opportunity to listen to Chrétien at a small forum. I found him to be very bright, humorous, and down to earth. He connected well with the needs of ordinary Canadians and overall was an extraordinary Prime Minister. Also, it is important to remember that before his time as Prime Minister, during his tenure as a Cabinet Minister in the Trudeau government, Chrétien played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Charter of Rights.

After Chrétien came Paul Martin. Again, there were high expectation - Martin did exceptionally well as Finance Minister. His intentions were good but as leader he faltered and caused serious divisions in the party. This was especially the case as he tried to get even with the Chrétien Liberals. This was a major force which, in the end, brought him down.

Then there was Stéphane Dion who unexpectedly won the 2006 Liberal leadership race. Dion's heart was in the right place, he is sincere, principled, and very intelligent. Unfortunately though, he was not a great communicator, especially with regards to the English language. As well, he did not have full support of his caucus and knives were constantly out for him.

Now comes Michael Ignatieff. Initially, I thought he had potential and that he would do well as leader given his background and international experience. But he turned out to be more an American conservative than a Canadian Liberal. Ignatieff's hawkish positions on Afghanistan and Iraq are distressing. When he was first running for the leadership, he did take the position that Israel's bombing of Lebanon was excessive. However, the pro-Israel lobby prevailed on him and since then his positions have been very distressful.

Despite Israel's murder and mayhem in Gaza from December 2008 to January 2009, Ignatieff gave even stronger support to them than did Harper and Bush. Ignatieff sounds like someone who wants to be Prime Minister at any cost. Also, he does not quite understand the grassroots in Canada.

One more thing, not entirely related, that I would like to add. I am not sure why the blogger Anxious Liberal was dropped from Liberals Online. I read his post on Ignatieff. It is a strong opinion, but primarily he calls the actions in question "unethical" and not "illegal." For this reason, I do not see it to be libellous. Unfortunately, this word libellous has been used too casually I find.

It would be greatly appreciated if James Curran will give some explanation because this particular aggregate is about tolerance of diverse opinions as long as they are not libellous. After all, tolerance of diversity was the primary reason for the foundation of this aggregate in the first place.

Poor John King was at it again with his magic wall, cheered on by Wolf Blitzer. He had this worldcloud to explain President Obama's speech before his press conference last week. Afghanistan: Is Pakistan a victim?

Last Friday I was watching CBC and a former Canadian General (I did not write down his name and could not find it later) was being interviewed. I was stunned at what I heard. The good general said that what people don't know is that Pakistan lost more soldiers than all the NATO soldiers killed put together. I tried for the CBC news and I could not find it on the net but here is what I found out: Up-to-date all NATO forces put together lost 1122 soldiers (details given below per country). According to one estimate Pakistan lost over 3000 soldiers in the conflict by 2006.

To Date:

Total deaths by country

Australia: 10

Canada: 116

Czech Rep.: 3

Denmark: 21

Estonia: 3

Finland: 1

France: 27

Germany: 29

Hungary: 2

Italy: 14

Latvia: 1

Lithuania: 1

Netherlands: 18

Norway: 3

Poland: 9

Portugal: 2

Romania: 9

South Korea: 1

Spain: 25

Sweden: 2

UK: 152

US: 673

Total: 1122

Pakistan by 2006: 3,000

This is frightening. No wonder Musharraf was shown the door. It must be very difficult for Pakistani politicians to convince its population to further sacrifice for a US war. There were millions of Afghanis who took refuge in Pakistan since 1978 when the former-USSR first invaded Afghanistan and then in 2001 when NATO forces came into Afghanistan. These Afghanis, some second generation in Pakistan, have sympathies for the Taliban.

These deaths do not include civilians through direct bombing or killed by suicide bombers in Pakistan. Moreover, thousands upon thousands of Afghani soldiers and civilians were killed in the last 8 years. How dreadful and to what end. The real sad part is that no Afghani or Pakistani was involved in the 9/11 attacks. If only there was someone with brains in the Whitehouse at the time. A lot more could have been achieved through diplomacy and negotiations and there was a good chance that those responsible for 9/11 could have been captured and dealt with. However, cowboy Bush, gun-toting Cheney and Rumsfeld wanted to show their military muscles.

After watching CBC news I can better understand that why Pakistani politicians and military will be hesitant for any more carnage of their people.

George Galloway banned from Canada

We are becoming a joke for the world. George Galloway is a terrorist? Now let us look at the other terrorists by that definition (ie. of having met with "terrorists").

Tony Blair: He recently met with Hamas leaders to work out some resolution to the Israel/Palestinian situation. Should be banned from Canada according to Mr. Meir Weinstein Leader of Jewish Defence League in Canada.

Jimmy Carter: He met with the Hamas leader last fall. Terrorist, and should be banned according to Weinstein's definition.

Dick Cheney: He met with Saddam Hussien during 1980s thanking him for fighting with Iran and encouraging him. A terrorist (he probably is the way Iraqis are being terrorized now) and must be banned from Canada.

These are some of the prominent people who Weinstein should get banned if he is to be consistent. Is Weinstein running Canada? What the hell is going on. As you see in the video he also makes all kinds of threats to those who would help Mr. Galloway in any way to come to Canada or assist in any way to covey his message to Canadians on the Afghanistan war. Harper has turned Canada into a joke and an agent of fundamentalists. Iggy is only too happy to help Harper and the JDL in this regard. Can you believe all this?

Robbing Canadians of freedom of speech I think Mr. Harper, Mr. Ignatieff and Mr. Weinstein should be banned from Canada. They truly are a danger to Canadian democracy.

Then there is this Alykhan Velshi, an assistant to Jason Kenney Minister of Immigration, who also called Galloway a terrorist. This guy is a moron and should join his brother Ali Velshi at CNN and then both can predict gloom and doom for the world.

They become criminals because they do not know better. Someone should brief Harper on Rehabilitation 101. Putting youth in jails is not only a waste of public funds but also it destroys the life of the detainee. Pakistan the Achilles' Heel

Asif Ali Zardari, the President of Pakistan, has problems. He had a coalition with the opposition before toppling Pervez Musharraf but since becoming President he has wavered from some positions, including freeing judges who were imprisoned by Musharraf, in order to maintain his hold on power. In recent days Zardari faced major countrywide demonstrations over it and caved into the opposition's demands. But I do not think his troubles are over. Given the history of Pakistan, the military has ruled it for most of its existence since getting freedom from the colonial power of Britain in 1947. The military could be breathing down Zardari's neck and a military take over may happen again. The Generals may not take over the Presidency but rather appoint a puppet and take over day-to-day governing.

The instability in Pakistan is an Achilles' heel for Obama and the US. Instability in Pakistan may bring more woes for Obama than he expected. Northern and Western parts of Pakistan, such as Baluchistan and the Northwestern territories, are already strongholds of rebels.

Millions of Afghans, especially from its southern part, have taken refuge in Pakistan since 1978 when the former USSR invaded Afghanistan. That process of migration has continued for over 30 years now and Afghans, especially Pashtuns, are a force to be reckoned with in Pakistan. They have spread all over the country and they are sympathetic to Afghanistan and Taliban causes, For some of them, Osama bin Laden is an iconic figure thanks to the handling of Afghan war by Bush. It has made more enemies than friends. All this rings danger bells for the US and maybe for the world. Pakistan is a nuclear power and if nukes do get into the hands of those who detest the US, this along with the already existing animosity with India over Kashmir, means trouble. Watch out world. US power and any other powers may not be able to control this explosion. Therefore diplomacy and quick resolution of the situation is essential to avoid looming catastrophe. Military victory in Afghanistan is simply impossible especially when the situation in Pakistan is factored in.

Obama has too much on his plate. Besides the economy, these wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are not going to go away easily. Bush and his cronies are now saying they have made the US safe but the reality is that the US and the whole world has been endangered because of Bush-Cheney blunders. Other super powers are sensing the weakness of the US. Russia wants to establish Russian combat aircraft stations in Cuba which sounds like the early 1960s when there was the Cuban Missile Crisis (and nuclear war was narrowly averted). Venezuela is inviting Russia to station its fighter aircraft in that country. This looks like countering U.S. plans to deploy a missile shield in Central Europe. China is flexing its muscles with the recent confrontation of the US ship Impeccable in the South China Sea where the Chinese are challenging the US ship's presence there. Lots of trouble for Obama. It is hoped that the world will come out of this dangerous situation started by the Bush-Cheney dark era.

For Obama, a good starting point would be to defuse the Afghanistan/Pakistan ticking bomb first.

Bernie Madoff – The Face of Greed

If you do not know his crimes then he looks so 'normal' and almost resembles George Washington - the first president of US. But once you know his crimes then he is a monster who destroyed thousands of lives through sheer greed, including the life of his own family. At least two of his victims have committed suicide because of economic helplessness.

Human greed can be the Weapon of Mass Destruction - like Bush going after Iraqi oilfields using all kinds of masks which are coming unravelled as time goes by. This weapon of mass destruction - the greed - could be very deadly as Bush succeeded in causing the death of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis with millions displaced and millions others living in squalor. Madoff has succeeded to destroy thousands of lives.

Now the financial and economic mess we are facing today can be traced back to the same weapon of mass destruction – Greed.

He reminds me of a character in the novel Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky where a murderer makes a lot of money by killing an old rich woman and usurping her wealth but then feels that his life is worthless and finally his feelings of misery lead him to hand himself over to the authorities. Madoff must have lived a miserable life despite all the luxuries, as he wasted no time to admit his crimes when confronted by the judge. Maybe he is protecting some partners in crime as well.

Madoff, a Jew himself, even swindled some holocaust survival fund and as Jon Stewart put it, even Hitler would have said "com'n Bernie."

Barack Obama: It is lonely at the top

Media stories are that Obama's hair is rapidly greying. It is lonely up there. Economy in shambles and downward spiral continues. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Somewhat increased violence in Iraq. In Afghanistan violence never subsided and it is a different landscape both physically and socially. Seven years war has driven Al-Qaeda and Taliban into each others arms. There is no schism as is in Iraq of Sunnis and Shiites who could be used against each other. Al-Qaeda did not form any strong bond with either.

The list of problems goes on back on the home front for Obama. Health care, as people lose jobs and homes, is getting worse. He has inherited quite a mess. Unlike crazy Limbaugh, the rest of us have to wish Obama good luck because US survival depends on it and so does the global economy and peace.

Michael Ignatieff and Stephen Harper Celebrate Halloween

Some fellow bloggers have been trying to make comparison between these two. Actually there is no need for that. They are one and the same, cut from the same cloth.

They both supported the Iraq war wholeheartedly and supported the Afghanistan war as well. They both defend Israel's right to carry on mayhem in Gaza and agree on many more issues as well. Harper is pulling back on Afghanistan now. The man who said, "I do not believe in cut and run" and that fight against insurgence would be won or "you're with us or against us" (repeating Bush’s mantra) now suddenly says that the Afghanistan war is not winnable. How did he find that out? Partially the war was "winnable" because he was making brownie points with the war when his idol Bush was in the Whitehouse, and now it may not be possible with Obama. Thus suddenly reality dawns on Harper. Don't get me wrong as I am all for the pull out of our troops as it is not a winnable war, but it is the flip-flops of Harper that I am pointing out.

I think both Iggy and Harper are a nightmare as leaders and hence perpetual Halloween. We need a real leader, however among the current Liberal and Conservative cadre I do not see any. So good luck Canada.

Israel and Apartheid

I saw this great write up on Dawg's blog: "Israeli apartheid: calumny or reality?" I wanted to leave a comment, but I could not. For some settings on my computer I am unable to leave a comment on many haloscan type settings so I have given up.

I do wish to point out that I agree with Dawg's reasoning. As a matter of fact, some observers have indicated that conditions in Palestinians areas, especially Gaza, are worse than they were in Apartheid South Africa because blacks in South Africa were at least able to work and earn their living. In Gaza, even that is hard to come by. There is simply too much to read and it is plain heart-wrenching. That we in Canada and the US support such apartheid is simply incredible – by "we" I mean our governments because the public in general, when they are aware of these apartheid conditions, will not support them.

Below is a video which speaks volumes. These are Australian folks who are opposed to this apartheid.

Stephen Harper scared Russians away

The media story goes that a day before Obama's visit to Canada, Russian fighter planes violated Canada's airspace over the Arctic. PM Harper scrambled the fighter jets and scared the Russians away. Oh really! We are an air power to reckon with given our mighty, fierce Snowbirds. Watch out Putin. Now Harper not only defends our sovereignty over the Arctic but also protects Uncle Sam from those big bad Russians.

I do not think that Sarah Palin sounded so bad when she said that when Putin comes to the US he has to cross Alaska therefore she knows all about Russia. Steve scared away the Russians. That is something. We should erect his statue on the North Pole, preferably made of ice. With global warming that statue should last a long time...

Rush Limbaugh fuming

I heard Rush Limbaugh speak at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference). He was supposed to speak for twenty minutes but kept on and on babbling for over NINETY minutes.

I thought the guy was crazy but I did not know the extent of it. He went to great lengths to explain why Obama must fail. He said Obama would punish the hard working, God fearing, rich people and empower the lazy poor who'd rather live on food stamps than work. According to him if Obama succeeds, then American society will be destroyed beyond repair.

What was interesting was that he got standing ovation after standing ovation from the CPAC audience. He did excite his audience, but then so did Hitler. Limbaugh is scary. Maybe he should be Republican candidate for president so that people can understand the true nature of neo-CONS.
