Stephen Harper at Golden Temple

A typical politician will do anything to win votes. Harper is a champion in that art. In India he visits Sikh's holiest place, the Golden Temple, in order to win Sikh votes back home. However his memory is very weak. How can he forget that his government wanted Sikh immigrant to change their last names because Singh had wrong connotations according to Harper government.

Also it was Harper who tried to link a Sikh MP's family to terrorism. Read the story here.

I thought politicians had long memories; however Harper suddenly suffers from amnesia.

  1. Has Harper forgotten that the reason why the Air India 182 bombing happened in 1985 was maybe in part because of the invasion of the Golden Temple by Indian forces the previous year (i.e. it was a revenge attack)? Many in India, as well as Canada, are still outraged that those responsible for the terrorist attack have evaded justice.

For a Canadian PM to stand in front of the Harmandir Sahib is almost the same as if any Christian would stand beside the Kaaba in Mecca. The optics on this are just so wrong.

  2. Violence is wrong no matter who the culprit is and culprits must be made accountable. However, we cannot be naïve about the way politicians operate. Bush held hands with the King of Saudi Arabia when he was visiting US and kisses were exchanged when Dubya visited Saudi Arabia. Bush and Cheney family do business with Bin Laden family of Saudi Arabia. Obama bowed in front of Saudi King as well. Do you think Harper will be left behind? I doubt it. His next trip abroad probably could be Saudi Arabia - all for the black gold. Politicians are genetically programmed for hypocrisy.
