It is amazing that Stephen Harper, Peter Mackay and Rick Hillier all either have amnesia or don't recall (typical excuse in order to hide the truth) receiving any memo from Richard Colvin, a senior Canadian diplomat in Afghanistan now posted in the US. In these memos, it was stated that detainees handed over by Canadian troops to Afghan authorities were routinely tortured. How can they not know? They have lost any credibility, not that they had any. It does not look good on Canada. We wittingly or unwittingly were party to war crimes. How can we condemn Rwanda or other similar war atrocities by other societies when we ourselves were heavily involved? Very sad times for Canada.

Agreed. What this government lacks (scratch that: what all entrenched party-based governments lack, and increasingly so over time) is a sense of accountability.
ReplyDeleteThe solution, if there can be said to be a solution, is term limits and regular rotation of parties and governments. We need to hold politicos' feet to the fire. The traditional Western habit of re-electing "popular" governments achieves the opposite of what it is intended to do, namely, reward results and achievement. Rather, in all cases, it fosters arrogance and complacency. NO party should arrogantly presume themselves "the party of government"; all parties should have to presume the need to fight for every last vote.
The Public Eye, you make good points. We should start from the term limits of a leader in power. Let us say not more than 8 years. Unfortunately established institutions are very hard to change and we can only promote and hope for the best.
