“Burman: Canada’s windows on the world are quietly closing” The Toronto Star

People wait at the door of the Iranian embassy in Ottawa to collect passports, Friday September 7, 2012. Canada has closed its embassy in Iran and is expelling all remaining Iranian diplomats in Ottawa. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Fred Chartrand

Ideology over reality as Harper radically restructures Canada’s role in the world, away from peace-keeper, to a George W. Bush style unilateralism on the military, pariah on climate change, and a sacrificing of our independence through joint embassies with the United Kingdom. Canada has a lot to offer the world – Mulroney took a decisive stand against apartheid going against Reagan and Thatcher, Trudeau and Pearson were powerful presences on the world stage.

Harper doesn’t care about this legacy, he doesn’t see much role for Canada as a productive force on the world stage.

“Canada’s windows on the world are gradually being closed. This is happening quietly and with little notice or debate — but with an obvious sense of ideology. Having lived and worked outside of Canada for four of the past five years — in the Middle East and Washington — I could see it in the radical restructuring of Canada’s historic relations with various parts of the world, such as Latin America, the Arab world, China, East Asia and Africa. From the outside, these changes made little sense.”

Disappointing Decision By CBC - Mark Kelly

Mark Kelly

I understand this is a difficult time for the CBC, with the CONS trying to choke them by cutting off their funding. That was the reason given for cancelling Mark Kelly's news/current events show "Connect" on CBC Newsworld.

For a while, after cancelling Kelly's show, they had documentaries in that spot. Re-running documentaries is cheaper than hiring staff and airing a live show. However, they've now replaced it with a news show, basically straight headline news.

With complaints of the media being too driven by sound-bytes, Mark Kelly's show was a welcome addition for exploring particular issues more in-depth - war, poverty, and other societal concerns. His show was a true example of the rapidly fading art of investigative reporting.

As well, Kelly was a great host, engaging and entertaining.

I would think the new "news hour" type show involves staff and expenses just as Mark Kelly's did. Seems CBC is lowering its journalistic standards.

I believe this is one of the most stupid actions the Harper government has taken. I am amazed that generally media is silent on this issue. Fellow liberal bloggers have said very little on this.

Harper has denigrated our country in the international community. On the environment Canada has become a pariah in the world. We are nobody when it comes to the United Nations. His Highness Harper is in N.Y to receive some shoddy award from a little-known group but is not even visiting the United Nations where the annual meeting of the General Assembly is occurring, just a few blocks away. 100 world leaders will be there. Topless Kate Middleton and other red-faced royals in the past

The Toronto Star has a great story on this. All the stories of red-faced royals are good; however, Prince Philip is up there near the top of the list.

"Prince Philip would stick to prepared scripts on foreign trips.

He's over 90 now, so most people have given the Queen's husband a wide berth of forgiveness. But there was a time when the Palace was often scrambling to smoothe over remarks he made while on various royal tours. In 1996 in Beijing, he told some British exchange students: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed." In 2002 in Australia, he asked an indigenous businessman: "Do you still throw spears at each other?" In 1994, he asked a native of the Cayman Islands: "Aren't most of you descended from pirates?" Philip never seems to apologize for remarks like this, at least publically. And his misguided witticisms haven't stopped. Several months ago, he asked a fellow in a mobility scotter if he had run over anybody."

Kate Middleton’s topless pictures continue to grab headlines

It is remarkable that how the world is obsessed with Middleton’s topless pictures which were taken in a blatant invasion of privacy of Will and Kate. Now Keli Goff, Author and Political Correspondent, TheRoot.com, writes in a column, published by The Huffington Post, that Kate Middleton’s notoriety can be used for the good of the world and humanity.

Goff writes:

“She should turn this entire embarrassing, uncomfortable situation into an opportunity. This situation proves once and for all that Middleton is one of the most visible, sought after women on the planet. She could allow this scandal to cause her to run from that role (although frankly it's a little late for that). Or she could embrace her new found influence and platform with gusto and use it for good, something she has been slow to do so far.”

I am sure these inappropriate pictures have caused the couple a lot of anguish and media should give them a break and leave them alone for a while.

‘Innocence of Muslims’ and cartoons in a French paper

Demonstrations in Egypt.

Who are the winners and losers? I was talking to a gentleman who understands the Muslim world better than I do and he made some very interesting points.

First the winners:

1) The major winners are the extremists who are given a perfect excuse to incite young Muslims who are mostly unemployed, hopeless and don’t much care about life. Unemployment in these countries is much higher than in western countries. We know the results. The US ambassador and three other embassy staff brutally killed in Libya. Also many embassies, US and other western countries’ embassies, are in danger as are the citizens of these countries abroad. France has closed many of its embassies.

2) The corrupt governments in many of these countries have the attention of the demonstrators turned away from their own governments to something which happened in the US and France. This includes corrupt governments in countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, and many others.

The losers:

The losers are western countries, in this case especially the US and France. The U.S lost four members of their embassy in Libya and soldiers in Afghanistan. And the threat continues.

Someone should tell these morons who made the offensive movie or those who did the cartoons that they have done no favour to their own countries and their citizens by endangering lives of fellow citizens abroad.

Neil Macdonald of CBC

What is wrong with this guy? He writes in an op-ed on the CBC website that the controversial movie “Innocence of Muslims” is merely an expression of freedom of speech. He writes:

“But speech is sacred in this country, even speech that can be weaponized. And there is a price to be paid.”

Mr. Macdonald, it is more than free speech. It is an extreme hate propaganda and hate crime. Ask the family and the loved ones of the Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other embassy members who lost their lives because of this film. Those who killed these innocent folks and those who produced this hateful propaganda film both are guilty and both are criminals.

He also defends Romney's position on this tragedy.

"Romney, facing mounting blowback for politicizing the crisis, stuck to his line Wednesday. The anti-Muslim video, he said, is speech, and free speech is a constitutionally protected American value, and under no circumstances should the American government ever apologize for it.

You can debate that position all you like, but Romney is correct about the status of Innocence of Muslims as protected speech."

Violence in Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and other Muslim countries

The murder of the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and of three other diplomats in Benghazi is a great tragedy.

These killings were senseless and nothing justifies them. It is unfortunate that people can be so easily incited in the name of religion.

Abassador: Chris Stevens

According to a report in The Huffington Post, ““The YouTube film sparked protests in Cairo and Benghazi, and were said to have been the reason behind the killing of the US ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.”

Since these murders took place on the eve of 9/11 some tried to blame it on the extremists who committed these murder to coincide with the 9/11 anniversary.

I believe it was retaliation against a very derogatory movie made by a person with the pseudo name Sam Bacile, he should be renamed imbecile. Media reports reveal that this movie was extremely derogatory to Prophet Muhammad and Muslims. I watched a news clip on CNN and it stated that the movie was so offensive that they would not show any part of it.

The Huffington Post reported that “The director of an anti-Islam film that reportedly sparked deadly protests in Libya and Egypt is said to have duped actors into believing they were making a movie about "Master George", and not the Prophet Muhammad.” Voices were dubbed later on.

Of all the cable news media, Fox News said the same thing and pointed out that the actors involved did not know what the movie was about as voices were dubbed later on. Here is the Fox news report:

“LOS ANGELES – The man who identified himself as the filmmaker behind the anti-Islam film “The Innocence of Muslims” may have used a pseudonym and spent time in federal prison. Meanwhile several actors in the movie say they were duped, and are now distancing themselves from the film that was cited as a spark to the violence in Libya that resulted in the murder of the United States’ ambassador to that country.

Initial reports stated an Israeli-born producer who identified himself as Sam Bacile had gone into hiding following the violence in Libya. FoxNews.com’s research on public and private databases, business filings, and people finding services came up empty on that name. Israeli authorities also claim to have no records of him being a citizen, although he said in interviews to be both a citizen of America and Israel.”

Pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Fla., who burned Qurans was another imbecile who was party to this so-called movie.

Bacile and co-conspirators have done extraordinary damage to world peace. Besides the four American lives lost in Benghazi, U.S diplomats are in danger elsewhere. These imbeciles also endangered the lives of Christians in Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and many other Muslim countries.

The American administration must do something about these criminals (movie makers) as lives are lost because of their hideous actions and more trouble may be on the way. Latest demonstrations were in Yemen.

Stephen Harper the warrior on Iran

What the hell were Harper and Baird thinking to cut diplomatic ties with Iran? What does Harper know that the rest of the world does not know? Even Britain is not cutting diplomatic ties with Iran. Britain should be more worried about the safety of its diplomats than Canada given Britain’s participation in wars both in Iraq and Afghanistan.

British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg told the BBC that U.K. is not considering "… cutting off all diplomatic relations with Iran; it doesn't mean we are in any way lessening our determination to try to find a diplomatic solution to the nuclear question."

Niaz Salimi, the president of the Iranian-Canadian Community Council, and others point to a possible military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities as a motive behind Canada's announcement.

"For us, it's an immediate sign of attack on Iran," Salimi told Embassy magazine.

Ken Taylor, who was Canada's ambassador in Iran during the U.S. hostage crisis that began in 1979, told CBC's Hannah Thibedeau he doesn't agree with Canada's decision to suspend diplomatic relations.

"Given Canada's status as an international player, there's great value to having someone there on the ground who can interpret what is going on, to the extent that there are challenges to doing that properly," he said.

Harper wants to have no relations with Iran but then he does not want to have any relations with the Canadian public either. He and his foreign minister need to explain this more clearly to the Canadian public.
